The Limassol Smart Grid pilot project, a 18-month demonstration involving 4,500 households and 600 commercial customers, has achieved measurable energy savings of 20% through advanced demand response and real-time load balancing technologies.
Technology Implementation
The pilot deployed advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), demand response systems, and micro-grid management software to optimize electricity distribution. Smart meters provide real-time consumption data to consumers, enabling behavioral energy efficiency improvements. Dynamic pricing signals encourage users to shift consumption to off-peak periods when renewable generation is abundant.
Total project investment was €8.2 million, with €4.1 million in EU co-financing through the Innovation Fund.
Scalability and Expansion
Results from the pilot have enabled the Cyprus Electricity Authority to plan full-scale smart grid deployment across the island by 2028. The technology enables integration of distributed solar and wind generation while maintaining grid stability. Grid losses were reduced by 12% in the pilot area, translating to significant cost savings at scale.
