The European Union has officially crossed the 400-gigawatt threshold for installed solar photovoltaic capacity. The milestone was driven by a record 75 GW of new installations in 2025, a 28% increase over the previous year.
Growth Drivers
Germany led the charge with 18.2 GW of new capacity, followed by Spain at 12.8 GW and Italy at 9.1 GW. Notably, Greece and Cyprus showed the highest per-capita growth rates in the bloc. The acceleration was fueled by falling module prices below €0.10 per watt and streamlined permitting processes.
Grid Integration Challenges
The rapid growth has intensified challenges around grid integration. Cyprus installed 480 MW of new solar capacity in 2025, bringing its total to 1.2 GW. The island's electricity authority has approved plans for a 150 MW solar park near Akrotiri.
