The Republic of Cyprus has formally submitted its updated National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) to the European Commission, committing to achieve 35% renewable energy penetration in the electricity system by 2030.
Strategic Pillars
The plan prioritizes three main pillars: solar energy expansion (targeting 2.0 GW capacity), onshore and offshore wind development (targeting 800 MW), and battery energy storage systems (targeting 440 MWh capacity). The government will invest €2.1 billion in renewable infrastructure, with additional €900 million from EU co-financing.
To achieve the 35% renewable target, Cyprus will retire its oldest coal-fired power plants and convert remaining capacity to natural gas generation. The LNG terminal at Vasilikos will provide fuel flexibility and reduce dependence on single suppliers.
Implementation Framework
Annual auctions will allocate 300-400 MW of renewable capacity to competitive developers. Grid modernization and smart metering will enable demand-side management and vehicle-to-grid services from electric vehicles.
