China sets new record with massive desert solar installation spanning 1,200 square kilometers in Xinjiang province.
China has inaugurated the largest solar power installation in human history, a 100-gigawatt mega-station spanning 1,200 square kilometers in the Taklamakan Desert, Xinjiang province. The project, developed by China Three Gorges Corporation, represents an investment exceeding $40 billion.
The installation features over 300 million solar panels utilizing the latest bifacial technology, capturing reflected light from the desert surface. Combined with integrated battery storage of 50 GWh, the facility can provide baseload power equivalent to 20 nuclear reactors.
President Xi Jinping attended the inauguration ceremony, calling the project a symbol of China commitment to carbon neutrality by 2060. The station will power the entire Xinjiang grid and export surplus electricity to Central China via ultra-high-voltage DC transmission lines spanning 3,000 kilometers.
International energy analysts described the project as a game-changer. The IEA noted that China now accounts for 65% of global solar capacity, with annual installations exceeding the rest of the world combined.
